Full-size excavators

For the bigger jobs, pond digging, large-lot clearing, deep excavation, and commercial site work. Putnam County has a lot of multi-acre parcels with mature timber and old pine plantation that need real excavating power to prepare for building. An excavator rental handles root balls, large stumps, and deep cuts that a mini can’t get through quickly.

Bulldozers

When you’re clearing timber, rough-grading large parcels, or pushing material on a building pad, a bulldozer rental is the fastest path to done. This is timber country, and the dozer is the machine that turns a harvested tract back into usable ground. We deliver on flatbed, and the machine arrives fueled and ready.

Stump grinders

Putnam is pine country, and after a cut you are left with stumps that will sit there for years unless they’re dealt with. A stump grinder rental turns them to mulch in place, no excavation, no hauling, and the ground is usable again when you’re finished. On a root-raked lot with stumps still in it, this is usually the last machine you need and the one that actually finishes the job.

Trenchers

For irrigation systems, drain lines, well lines, and underground utility runs. Trenching by hand in Florida sand is miserable work even on short runs. A trencher rental cuts a clean, consistent trench far faster than a mini excavator bucket. We carry a 48-inch ride-on for the long runs and a 24-inch walk-behind for tight yards.

The land around Palatka: what you should plan for

Palatka has more relief than most of North Florida, and that is not a detail you can ignore when you’re planning a site. The town sits on high sandy ground above the St. Johns, and the way water moves through that sand shapes everything you’ll run into.

Sand on top, clay underneath: Groundwater soaks down through the permeable sand until it hits the tighter clay and limestone layer below, then runs sideways and seeps out the flanks of the hill. Where that seepage has been working for a long time it undercuts the sand from underneath and the ground above slumps. The ravines at Ravine Gardens are the extreme version, 120 feet deep with 45-degree banks. The practical lesson for anyone excavating on a slope near the river or the ravines is that these sandy banks are less stable than they look. Bench your cuts and do not undercut a slope you’re standing under.

Flatwoods and wet depressions: Out along the SR-100 approach through Florahome and Etoniah Creek, the ground is fine sand that drains poorly to not at all: flatwoods, cypress domes, and low drainageways. Wetness is the limiting factor here, and you plan the drainage before you plan the pad.

Well drained sandhill and scrub: Mixed in with it, on the higher ground, is loose sand that drains freely. Digging is easy here. Holding a slope and keeping bare sand in place is the harder part.

The river floods: Palatka is a river town on the west bank of the St. Johns, and it has taken real water. During Hurricane Irma the river gages here hit major flood stage. If your property is on the low ground near the river, the Ocklawaha, or Rice Creek, know your flood zone before you spend a dollar moving dirt.

Common Palatka projects

Reclaiming cutover timber land: This is the signature Putnam County job. A tract gets harvested, and what’s left is stumps, root systems, and slash. Getting it back to buildable or plantable ground means a dozer or excavator to move the big material, a brush cutter for the rest, and a stump grinder to finish. It is rarely one machine.

Clearing a homesite on a wooded lot: Wooded parcels are what Putnam has, and they’re what people are buying. Clearing timber, removing stumps, rough-grading a pad, and establishing drainage, usually in that order.

Septic system work: Rural Putnam County runs on well and septic. Installing or replacing a system means excavation work in tight quarters, and a mini excavator is the standard tool for this job.

Driveway installation and repair: Long rural driveways in sandy soil rut and wash without a properly graded and compacted base. Getting the base right with a compact track loader before material goes down is the step most people skip and later regret.

Food plots and hunting property management: Hunting land is a significant part of Putnam County. Preparing food plots, clearing shooting lanes, and maintaining trail access all benefit from a compact track loader with a brush cutter attachment.

Post-storm cleanup: Putnam County knows what a hurricane does to a river town. When trees come down, having equipment on-site within a day to start clearing makes the difference between a one-week recovery and a month-long headache. We prioritize storm response for our service area.
