Why Lake Butler property owners and contractors rent from T.E.S.
Lake Butler sits at the center of Union County, one of the smallest counties in Florida but one of the most active for rural land development. We deliver equipment here regularly for homesite clearing, drainage work, and property improvement jobs on the wooded parcels and agricultural tracts around town.
We don’t just drop off a machine and wish you luck. Before a piece of equipment leaves our yard, we talk through your job, what you’re working with on-site, what you’re trying to accomplish, and what kind of experience you have operating equipment. That conversation is the difference between a rental that goes smoothly and one that costs you a day fighting the wrong machine.
If a 3.5-ton excavator will handle your drainage ditch, we’re not going to push you into a full-size unit. If your lot clearing job actually needs more capability than you think, we’ll explain why before you find out the hard way. The goal is to match the machine to the work, not just fill a booking.
Equipment we deliver to Lake Butler
Mini excavators (1.7-ton, 3.5-ton, and 5.0-ton)
The right machine for septic installs, drainage ditches, utility line trenching, and foundation work. Mini excavators fit into tighter lots common in town and along the residential roads off SR-238 and CR-231 without tearing up a yard to get to the work area. The 3.5-ton is the most common rental for residential work, big enough for real digging, compact enough to get through gates and fences.
Compact track loaders
If your project involves clearing brush, moving material, grading a lot, or loading debris, this is probably the machine you need. Compact track loaders handle the widest range of jobs we see, land clearing, driveway grading, food plot prep, fence line work, and storm cleanup. The rubber tracks perform well in the sandy soil conditions found across Union County and won’t tear up the ground the way wheeled equipment does.
We carry multiple sizes and a full set of attachments, buckets, grapples, and brush cutters, so the machine can be configured for your specific job.
Full-size excavators
For the bigger jobs, pond digging, large-lot clearing, deep excavation, and commercial site work. Union County has a lot of multi-acre parcels with mature timber that need real excavating power to prepare for building. A full-size excavator handles root balls, large stumps, and deep cuts that a mini can’t get through quickly.
Bulldozers
When you’re clearing timber, rough-grading large parcels, or pushing material on a building pad, a dozer is the fastest path to done. We deliver on flatbed, and the machine arrives fueled and ready.
Stump grinders
Union County lots are typically covered in pine, oak, and sweetgum. After clearing, the stumps left behind will sit there for years unless they’re dealt with. A stump grinder turns them to mulch in place, no excavation, no hauling, and the ground is usable again when you’re finished.
Trenchers
For irrigation systems, drain lines, well lines, and underground utility runs. Trenching by hand in Florida sand is miserable work even on short runs. A 48-inch trencher handles most residential and light commercial jobs and can cut a clean trench far faster than a mini excavator bucket.
The land around Lake Butler: what you should plan for
Union County is rural, and the properties here reflect that. Heavily wooded lots with mature pine and hardwood, agricultural tracts that have been in hay or timber production, and older homesteads where the land hasn’t been touched in years. Each of those starting conditions means a different equipment approach.
Former pine forestry land – A lot of the parcels listed for sale around Lake Butler were planted in commercial pine. Once the timber’s been harvested, you’re left with stumps, root systems, and slash that need to be dealt with before grading. A compact track loader with a brush cutter attachment can process the smaller material, but for root-raked lots with remaining stumps, you’ll want a stump grinder to finish the job.
Wooded residential lots – The lots along SR-238, CR-241, and the roads south and west of town tend to be heavily wooded with oak and pine. Clearing these for a homesite means matching equipment to the timber size. Smaller lots with immature growth work fine with a compact track loader. Lots with mature hardwood often require an excavator or dozer to handle the larger trunks and root systems.
Low-lying areas and drainage – Lake Butler and the surrounding landscape sit in a zone that holds moisture. Properties near the lake itself or in lower-elevation areas can have water table issues, especially during the wet season. Drainage work is one of the most common jobs we help with out here, mini excavators handle residential drainage channels cleanly, and trenchers are the right tool for longer runs that need consistent depth.
We work in these conditions regularly and can help you think through what equipment actually fits your site before you commit.
Common Lake Butler projects
Clearing a homesite on a wooded lot – There are dozens of parcels actively listed for sale in Union County right now, most of them wooded. Getting one of these lots ready for a home means clearing timber, removing stumps, rough-grading a pad, and establishing drainage, often in that order, and often with more than one piece of equipment.
Driveway installation and repair – Sandy soil without proper compaction creates driveways that rut and wash. Grading the base correctly with a compact track loader before material goes down is the step most people skip and later regret.
Septic system work – Rural Union County runs on well and septic. Installing or replacing a system means excavation work in tight quarters, a mini excavator is the standard tool for this job.
Food plots and hunting property management – Hunting land is a significant part of Union County. Preparing food plots, clearing shooting lanes, and maintaining trail access all benefit from a compact track loader with a brush cutter attachment.
Post-storm cleanup – North Florida takes hits from tropical storms and hurricanes. When trees come down, having equipment on-site within a day to start clearing makes the difference between a one-week recovery and a month-long headache. We prioritize storm response for our service area.

3. We deliver. Equipment arrives on your schedule, ready to run. Delivery to Lake Butler is typically around 25 minutes from our Starke location. We walk you through machine operation before we leave.
4. You work. We’re available if you need us. If something comes up during your rental, a question about an attachment, a change in scope, a mechanical issue, call us. You’re not calling a 1-800 number. You’re calling the same person who set up the rental.
What sets T.E.S. Rentals apart
Owner-operated, every call. There’s no dispatch desk or call center. When you call T.E.S., you’re talking to Zeb, the owner, the person who inspects the equipment, and the person who’ll answer the phone if you need help on a Saturday.
We don’t upsell. If your project can be done with a smaller machine, we’ll tell you. If the scope of work genuinely needs something bigger, we’ll explain why so you can make the call.
Equipment arrives ready. Every machine is inspected and maintained between rentals. Fluids checked, greased, fueled, and ready to operate from the first turn of the key.
Realistic guidance for DIY operators. A lot of our Lake Butler rentals are property owners tackling a project themselves for the first time. We take extra time with those customers, walking through controls, attachments, and site approach, so the rental is productive, not frustrating.
“The entire experience was top-notch. Zeb provided hands-on customer service and made sure we had the right size machine and attachments for our project. Delivery and pickup were easy, and he took the time to make sure we understood how to operate everything before leaving.”
