Mini Excavator Rental in Lake Butler, FL

Stump and root removal is the number one reason Lake Butler property owners call us about a mini excavator. Union County is pine flatwoods country, and once those pines come down, what’s left in the ground is a root system that won’t come out by hand and won’t rot on its own timeline. A mini excavator with a hydraulic thumb is the tool that gets them out.

We carry three size classes and match the machine to the job based on what you’re actually digging, not just what’s cheapest on the price sheet.

Three size classes, and how we decide which one fits your job

We don’t ask which size you want. We ask what you’re doing, how big the material is, and what the ground looks like, then we recommend the machine that handles it without wasting your time or money.

1.7-ton: Yanmar ViO17

The most compact excavator we carry. Retractable tracks narrow down for gates and tight access. Equipped with a 12-inch bucket, push blade, and swing boom.

This machine is built for precision work in small spaces, short utility trenches, shallow drainage runs, and light digging where a larger machine would be overkill. It’s not the right tool for stump removal or heavy root work, and we’ll tell you that upfront if your project calls for more capability.

Best for: utility trenching in clean ground, shallow drainage channels, light residential excavation.

3.5-ton: Yanmar ViO35 and John Deere 35G

The most versatile mini excavator in our fleet and the machine we recommend most often for Lake Butler projects. Available with 12-inch, 18-inch, and 24-inch buckets. Both machines come with hydraulic thumbs, essential for grabbing stumps, roots, and debris out of the hole rather than just pushing dirt around.

The 3.5-ton handles septic installs, drainage ditches, and root removal on small to moderate-diameter trees. It has enough breakout force to work through Union County’s clay layer without bogging down, and it’s still compact enough to get through standard residential lots.

If you’re unsure which size you need, this is almost always the right starting point.

Best for: septic system installation, drainage ditches, root and stump removal on smaller-diameter trees, utility trenching in hard ground.

5.0-ton: John Deere 50G and Hitachi ZX50

When the root systems are bigger and denser than what a 3.5-ton can handle, the 5.0-ton steps in. Equipped with a 24-inch tooth bucket and a 36-inch smooth bucket, hydraulic thumb, and push blade.

The 50G is generally oversized for standard septic work, it earns its place on jobs with heavier root density and larger-diameter stumps. If your property has mature pines or hardwoods with substantial root systems, the 5.0-ton rips them out much faster the 3.5-ton would take.

Best for: stump and root removal on larger-diameter trees, heavy clearing excavation, deep drainage on root-dense properties.

What makes Lake Butler ground different

Union County sits in Florida’s pine flatwoods region. The soil profile here is different from what you’ll find in Keystone Heights or Clay County, the clay hardpan layer is closer to the surface, sometimes within a foot or two of the topsoil.

That matters when you’re digging because the first few inches feel easy, loose, sandy, cooperative. Then you hit clay. A machine that was moving smoothly through sand suddenly has to work harder, and an undersized excavator will slow down or stall at that transition.

The 3.5-ton handles this well, it has enough breakout force to push through the clay layer on most residential projects. But if you’re digging deeper (pond edges, deep drainage, large stump extraction), the clay gets denser and the 5.0-ton makes the difference between a productive day and a frustrating one.

When you call, we’ll ask about your dig depth and what you expect to hit, that conversation takes two minutes and keeps you from fighting the wrong machine all weekend.

The most common mini excavator jobs in Lake Butler

Stump and root removal – The number one rental. Union County properties are dominated by pine, and once those trees are cleared, the stump and root system left behind prevents you from grading, building, or mowing. A mini excavator with a hydraulic thumb grabs the stump, rocks it loose, and pulls it out, root ball and all. The 3.5-ton handles most stumps. Larger-diameter pines and hardwoods with extensive root networks move to the 5.0-ton.

Septic system installation – Rural Union County runs on well and septic. A new install means excavating for the tank, trenching the drain field lines, and connecting to the structure. The 3.5-ton is the standard tool, the hydraulic thumb helps position the tank during placement, and the multiple bucket sizes let you switch between wide excavation and narrow trenching on the same rental.

Drainage channels and ditches – Pine flatwoods don’t always drain where you want them to. Properties around Lake Butler, especially lower-lying parcels south and west of town, often need drainage channels cut to manage water during the wet season. A mini excavator cuts precise channels without tearing up the surrounding yard.

Foundation prep for outbuildings – Sheds, barns, pole barns, and detached workshops need a level pad. A mini excavator grades the area quickly, especially when tree roots from prior clearing are still in the ground.

Utility trenching – Running water lines, electrical conduit, or irrigation on rural properties. The 12-inch bucket on the 1.7-ton or 3.5-ton cuts a narrow trench. If you expect roots or hard digging, start with the 3.5-ton: the 1.7-ton doesn’t have the breakout force for obstructed ground.

Burning brush or debris on-site? You’ll need to provide proof of insurance coverage before the rental can be finalized. This is a firm requirement, mention it when you call so we can handle it before your start date.

How sizing actually works

The biggest mistake we see is choosing a smaller machine based on price alone. A 1.7-ton costs less per day than a 3.5-ton, but if the job actually needs the 3.5, you’ll spend twice as long fighting the work, and the extra rental time costs more than the price difference between machines.

Here’s the simplified version of how we think about it:

The job determines the machine, not the budget. We ask what you’re digging, what’s in the ground, and how big the material is. Those answers point to a specific size class.

Tree diameter drives stump removal sizing. Smaller-diameter pines and softwoods work fine with the 3.5-ton. Once the stems get larger and the roots go deeper, the 5.0-ton has the force to handle them without stalling. Hardwoods like oak are denser than pine at the same diameter, so a 6-inch oak is a harder pull than a 6-inch pine.

The 50G is not always better. It’s more machine, but it’s also more to transport and more to maneuver on tight lots. If the 3.5-ton handles the job, there’s no reason to upsize. We recommend the 50 when the work genuinely requires it.

When you call, we walk through this with you in a few minutes. No guesswork, no surprises when you get on-site.

Most of our Lake Butler customers are doing this themselves

A lot of the mini excavator rentals we do in Union County are DIY property owners, people who bought land, cleared it (or had it cleared), and now need to deal with the stumps, drainage, or septic work themselves. That’s a different customer than a contractor who runs equipment every day.

We adjust for that. If you’ve never operated a mini excavator, we walk you through it at delivery or pickup, controls, swing clearance, bucket curl, thumb operation, and how to work safely around underground utilities. The 3.5-ton is a forgiving machine for newer operators while still being productive enough to get real work done.

We’d rather spend ten minutes showing you how the machine works than have you spend two hours figuring it out on your own.

Why rent from T.E.S.

Every call goes to the owner. You describe the project, we recommend the right machine, not the most expensive one, and not the cheapest one that’ll leave you frustrated. Equipment shows up inspected, fueled, and ready to dig. Hydraulic thumbs, push blades, and your choice of buckets are included.

“The entire experience was top-notch. Zeb provided hands-on customer service and made sure we had the right size machine and attachments for our project. Delivery and pickup were easy, and he took the time to make sure we understood how to operate everything before leaving.”
